  96. Just another data point for those studying the FCC/ARRL turn around time for
  97. licenses.  I upgraded from Tech (old fashioned) to Advanced on Dec. 2 and
  98. just received my new ticket in the mail yesterday (Jan 31).  What a finale to
  99. a brutal month in PA!!  My uncle passed his Tech exam on Dec 3, and got his new
  100. call yesterday also.  He is now N3RJT.  Living in the town of Jim Thorpe, PA,
  101. we came up with a good phonetic for him, "Radio Jim Thorpe"!  How fitting!
  102. His son passed the test with him but has yet to get his ticket.  Maybe today
  103. unless he got in the next batch to arrive next week.  We were all surprised
  104. to get them this soon, assuming the standard delay plus holiday delay plus
  105. delays from Mother Nature's beatings.

  135. I agree, but I also believe that the construction articles have
  136. to be carefully targeted, and within reach. I'd also like to
  137. see articles on older gear, both generic and specific, that with
  138. some wrenching, tuning, and tweaking, can be made more serviceable
  139. for the average newcomer.

  152. I've just gained some interest in playing with my soundblaster
  153. card for radio purposes.

  155. I have been trying to use FFTMORSE, but I can't get it to do
  156. anything but make clicking noises - nothing displays in the
  157. frequency box.  Any ideas on what could be wrong?

  159. Also, what other radio programs are available that use the
  160. soundblaster, and where might I find them?

  175. 15 meters was open and crowded with 599 signals in the Seattle area
  176. on Sunday afternoon, Jan 30th.
  177.  
  178. I made a contact with a ham in Gainsville, GA at about 2:55 pm on 15
  179. meters CW. We exchanged signal reports and then he said, "I`ll say 73,
  180. the super bowl is abt to start". So I said 73 and ended the contact.

  182. At 3:05 pm it was hard to find any signals on 15 meters. The band shut
  183. down. I thought it was amazing that solar activity just happened to
  184. coincide with the beginning of the super bowl--hi hi.

  186. The shut down was quite dramatic.

  212. Does it exist a mod for extended tx frequencies ?
  213. Do you know how open the freq. 150.000 to 170.000 Mhz ?
  214. Is it a solder jumper to remove ?
  215. Does it exist a FTP site where I can find such informations ?

  259.   I have just gotten into 40m QRP using the MFJ-9040 and a dipole.  I have
  260. yet to make a DX contact with it, but I HAVE worked all over the east coast.
  261. The trick for DX is staying up late and hanging out in the low portion of
  262. the band.  The Novice sub-band gets horrible at night but below 7.050 or so
  263. there is no broadcasting or voice operation.  Canadians and some others in
  264. Region 2 have phone priveleges where we have CW only.  A buddy of mine works
  265. 40m into Europe on 2.5 watts on a regular basis.
  266.   I'm not sure what antenna you have in mind.  My dipole was easy to build
  267. and cheap.  I have room to stretch it out, but there are things you can do to
  268. shrink it.
  269.   By the way, if you're considering the MFJ, count me as a big fan.  Also, the
  270. active audio filter is WELL worth the scant few bucks it costs.  It is just
  271. a couple of op-amps (on one chip) on a little daughterboard.  Aren't op-amps
  272. great!?  Turning on the filter really kills the QRM!
